Celebrating the life of
Ronald Lee Rohlfs
May 11, 1949 - July 03, 2015
SAVANNAH – Ronald L. Rohlfs, 66, died Friday, July 3, 2015, as the result of an accident suffered on July 2, 2015. A native of Jersey City, NJ, he was raised in Winston-Salem, NC. After graduating from high school, Ron entered the US Army, serving in Viet Nam (1969-1970). He was discharged from the Army as a Captain in 1972, having been awarded the Bronze Star, Combat Infantry Badge, Good Conduct Medal, and Viet Nam Service Medal.
Following his military service Ron joined the Columbus, GA Police Department, where he served from 1972 until 1976, rising to the position of homicide/robbery detective. During this time he attended Columbus College, where he graduated with degrees in Criminal Justice. In 1976 he joined the Georgia Bureau of Investigation. He ultimately achieved the honor of serving as Special Agent-in-Charge of the Savannah Regional Drug Enforcement Office, from which he retired in 1999.
In retirement he was able to thoroughly enjoy two great loves of his life, golf and cooking. Ron was an active participant with the Hunter Blitz Golf Association, having played (a low estimate) of 902 rounds with the group, and also served as officer serving the secretary for a period of time. Anyone who was ever privileged to have a meal prepared by Ron knows that he was an exquisite chef.
Surviving are his wife, Sue “Susie” Chapman Rohlfs; daughter, Amy Rohlfs Jenkins (Jack); three grandsons, Evan, Eron, and Brayden; brother, Robert H. Rohlfs, Sr. (Rosemary), of Albuquerque, NM; his former wife and mother of his daughter, Wanda Price (Dennis); many nieces, nephews, and other loved ones. Also grieving his loss are feline friends Hairy, Fluffy, Sammy, Tator Tot, and Tortellini, and his canine best friend and companion, Sherman.
Ron and Susie are active parishioners at St. Peter the Apostle Catholic Church on Wilmington Island. Ron was predeceased by his parents, Raymond W. and Virginia G. Rohlfs, brother, Ray Rohlfs, Jr., and granddaughter, Ellie Brooke Jenkins.
Visitation: 5-7 PM, Friday, July 10, Fox & Weeks Funeral Directors, Islands Chapel, followed by a Rosary Service at 7 PM.

The job of a DA depends on the quality of the work of his or her partners in law enforcement. During my three decades in that office, Ron was one of the rare individuals I could count on for every aspect of that relationship. When Ron was leading the law enforcement function, I could turn my attention to other aspects of the problem and never look back, knowing his part of the job would be taken care of thoroughly, promptly, with integrity -- and with the wisdom that character and experience alone can provide. He was a true leader and a credit to his profession. It gives me joy to know how thoroughly he enjoyed his life in retirement, and the love of his friends and his wonderful wife Susie. -- Spencer Lawton

Susie, I am so sorry for your loss. Seeing you again at Brandon's wedding and meeting Ron were some of the highlights of that weekend in Destin. I was so shocked when Lynn called to tell me about Ron's passing. So very sorry.
